Blood Red Carnation Tree Coral Questions.

I am looking at this coral on the liveaquaria website and the information provided seems to contradict itself. The quick stats box says Moderate level of care with moderate to high light requirements but the description says very difficult to care for with low light requirements. I am upgrading to a 40breeder with a 29gallon sump and probably a 36” 2x150w Sunpod this summer. A large section of the sump will be dedicated to growing cheato. My plan for the tank is a mushroom, leather with some of these tree corals especially the blood red one as they add very unique color to the tank.

Some questions I have are would it be more beneficial to the coral to not run a skimmer thus keeping more food suspended in the water? What happens when you go on vacations for say a week and are not there to target feed the coral every day?

Any help is much appreciated. :D

My first instinct was to tell you to forget it, you aren't going to be successful. But, if you are really interested in that Dendronephthya, I suggest you read Paletta's book The Ultimate Reef Aquarim. There's a tank in there done by Howard Schwimmer, which is a Miracle Mud tank; no skimmer. He kept a red Dendronephthya for over a year before it declined.

I found this very interesting. I spoke with him about this over the phone. Howard was feeding phytoplankton daily. Perhaps importantly, he used a large UV filter.

I have wanted to do a small system like this for awhile. If you decide to do this, I recommend the Miracle Mud approach and a good UV filter, and daily or twice daily phytoplankton additions. And please let me know how you are doing with it!

Good luck
