Blue Eyelash Clownfish?

I just saw a beautiful "Blue Eyelash Clownfish" at the LFS. I've never seen one before and can't find one in any of my books or in the biopages. Has anyone ever hear of them or know their disposition. I would love to get this little guy but want to know more about him.

If it helps, he's yellow in coloring with light blue highlights above his eyes. His fins seem to be a bit larger and more flowing than other clownfish. Hope this helps. TIA

its most likely a term used for blue eyed clowns, or pearl eyed, its when they have some blue on the top of their eye, correct me if Im wrong. Its a genetic strain, or a rare morph I think, not 100%.

AFAIK that is correct. From what I have seen, the most common species exhibiting this is A. clarkii--at least a variant of this species.

yeah I think you got it right. The pearl eyed clarki.
Inland aquatics offers these for sale but never has them in. I thought that ORA was also offering these, we'll have to ask OAMA. In most cases it is only one eye that is affected, was this the case in the fish you saw?

I know I saw some pics somewhere, I hunt around

I've had a couple show up in raising clarkii's, some in one eye only and some in both. Here's a pic of one with the pearl marking on both eyes (fish on left):

Your are all right. I called the store back and asked if it was a clarkii variation since that was the closest I could find and they said it was. The one they have has the coloring above both eyes.

Fishboy42 - thanks for the pics. That's the fish! Do these tend to be aggressive in terms of clownfish behavior?

I'm glad it helped! IME they are exactly the same as other clarkiis with the exception of that pearl marking -- and being clarkiis they can be a bit aggressive at times.

I've heard that if you breed clarki you have a chance of getting a pearl eyed clarki in your offspring. Don't know what the chances are. OF course if you have a pair of pearl eyes then your chances increase.

good luck

The "pearl eye" is common to all of the clarkii complex species and happens in somewhere >1:10,000 fish.

My pair of akins have tear drops... Never seen that in any before. One of these days I will get some shots of that for all to see.

Okay, I admit it. I'm weak. I caved and bought the adorable little guy. Bought him yesterday and took a gamble.

I have a black perc, a misbar oscell. and a true perc in my 105g and said a prayer before I put him in.

There was a bit of wrangling at first for possession of a Xenia that my true perc likes to host in but I did some rock rearranging to help and now everyone is swimming together and sharing the Xenia.

My tank isn't mature enough for an anemone yet but my fish seem to be anxious for one to arrive. The blue eyelash (or pearl eye) keeps trying to give the Xenia food and get confused when it doesn't take it. He tried several times in a row today with the same piece of food before he went back to feeding himself. It was kind of cute.

Sorry if I'm getting mushy. I'm just thrilled with this new addition and that everyone is getting along. I'm praying it stays this way but if not, my husband said we'll get another tank for the new guy so we can keep him.

Thanks for all of the info on this little guy. He's a great find.

and above the issue of three types of clownfish in the same 105g tank, there's the potential disaster of adding a new fish without proper quarantine... hope your prayers are heard ;)

You are so right! I am hoping to start setting up a quarantine tank in the next two weeks but don't have one yet. This fish has been at the LFS for several weeks and looks very healthy. My LFS is very good about healthy fish so I'm taking my chances. I am planning a QT to avoid the risk in the future, though.

Sounds like a great start! I'm glad I got to see this little extra detail in some clowns! Learned a lot! Thanks.

when I had freshwater tanks, the LFS I got fish from always quarantined their arrivals for a few weeks before putting them in the displays... I wish I could find a store that carries saltwater fish that did the same... the problem is that even if the fish have been at the store for a while, often times tanks are connected and share the same water, so the moment a sick fish is placed in one of the tanks, the whole system is at risk. few fish stores are willing to dedicate separate tanks to quarantine fish properly.
