they seem to last a bit longer in tanks that are established...not to jump on ya, but you should have read up before buying(the same for anything)
typically, they live no more than a year or so in home aquaria i'm told(if established and no predators)

I've had mine over 2 1/2 yrs they do not except meaty foods they eat bacteria and algae.Your tank must be well astablished also.You can also try target feeding it a piece of nori,mine will except it.

is there a starfish that is recommended? easy to feed, care for, etc?

We've had a brittle star in our tank, unknown to us, for probably about a week or maybe longer. We found him recently on our sponge filter while cleaning it.
I don't know much about them, but this guy seems to be very hardy considering he probably hasn't eaten much of anything over the past week.
I believe he's a Sponge Brittle Star (Ophiothrix suensonii). They're not a starfish or sea star, but he's certainly pretty cool to have just found in our tank.

I had a Blue Linckia one time. He was nice and plump when I got him. After a couple of days he stopped moving around the tank and began getting skinny. He died after a few weeks. Like the others have already said, there's not much we can do to ensure their survival. Good luck with him, hopefully you'll be able to keep him for a long time.
