I have a total sps reef, with a few big clams. Will I have to worry about a blueface nipping? Dont they only nip or eat lps or zoos? I know Im taking my chances with the clam mantels, but are the sps totaly safe? What big angel would be the "safest" with sps ? Emperor?

Not to be trusted, particularly with the clams. Maybe you could try putting a clam in the QT tank with him to se if he'll behave, but eventually even if he passes the test, I think he'll eventually start nipping the clams.

im not trying to stir you up, but why put fish in a reef tank that are not reef safe fish? why not get a known reef friendly fish?

"Emperor Angelfish : Diet
This fish is not reef safe. They are normally seen in fish only tanks as opposed to reef tanks and there's a good reason for that.

In the wild their diet is made up of corals, sponges, tunicates and algae. Try to avoid housing them in an aquarium full of corals as they can make short work of them."

i know from knowing a friend who tried to make his fish only a mixed reef that the emperor angel will eat coral. he may not eat right away, but given time he will. its simply not a reef safe fish. sorry.

Not stirring me up at all....
i know a lot of people that have had fish that weren't labeled reef safe in a reef tank and have been fine. Also i know of fish that were labeled reef safe and have been terrible and ate coral. I had a jewel damsel that ate all my zoas years ago. Emperors do not eat sps thats why im considering one. I have 80% sps. The other 20% is gsp and zoas that are out of control and im hoping the angel will eat. So in my case the angel is reef safe. Im just asking owners to let me know how they have been in their reefs.

i have heard of a lot of people "playing the odds" and it working out though, so hopefully someone on here actually has one in a sps reef and can say one way or the other for sure.

good thing is if it does work out it will look awesome :)

Because it's fun.

I currently have a majestic angel in my reef. It ate my only chalice. It tastes SPS sometimes but doesn't eat the polyps. I think if your SPS colonies are big enough they can take a little nibbling. So far so good, he said sheepishly. He doesn't touch any other LPS so far. I wouldn't put a clam in there.

There are few fish species where one individual fish has not gone nutso and spoiled the "reef-safe" image for everyone! We have (in our club) had reports of coral-eating moorish idols, a lot of zoanthid-eating rabbitfish, even the odd crazy sailfin tang.
Fish are individuals!

I have an Emp. Angel in my 150g SPS dominated reef. I've had him for about a year now, and he is about 4.5" long now. So far, I haven't had any problems with him. I know they will make short work of Zoas, and Brain type corals, but healthy SPS should be fine for the most part. I suppose it depends on the individual fish for the most part. Some people get lucky, though I can't comment on clams. Never had one.

Also, keep your angel well fed too. That seems to help. I feed a healthy serving twice a day, and a sheet of nori every couple days as well.

I also keep a Torch coral, Frogspawn, Elegance, Pearl Bubble, Rics, and Shrooms. He hasn't messed with them either.

Hope this helps. All in all, it depends on the individual, and whether or not you are willing to take the risk with your corals. Mine is my showfish, and has done well for me (SO FAR).
