I followed it along since the beginning and picked one up during the initial release/pre-orders. Let me know if you have any specific questions I can try to answer them. As far as feedback, it works as it should and hooked up to my IP camera no problem. Spencer the owner/creator is also very knowledge, helpful and quick to reply.
As far as the extra expansion modules I wouldn't hold your breath on it, I'd say as of now if you want Apex functionality and features, get an Apex. Apex controllers are top notch and hold their value very well if you decide to move over to the Bluefish modules down the line. The Bluefish software still has some features and improvements I'd like to see that they're working on now.
I can wait on the expansion modules. Right now I just have my JBJ rimless 30g but Im hoping to upgrade in the near future to either the 80 or 120 IM RS Nuvo. Im currently slowly buying products that will work for my current tank but will also work on a larger tank. I just purchased a Kessil a360WE.
If all I need (at this time) is a dimmer/timer controller is it worth the savings instead of an Apex? And then when I eventually upgrade hoping that the power bar and probes are available?
A controller is definitely one of those "universal" parts that I would recommend everyone have if it's within your budget, it's a great investment that you can essentially carry on from tank to tank. If it's not you'll still need some kind of auto top off be it manual/automated and timers for your lights at minimum. A controller will allow you to turn on/off things without pulling plugs or flipping switches, add redundancy to heaters in case of malfunction, better ATO capabilities / similar to standalone modules and a host of other features and customization options.
If all you're looking for is dimming/timer and you don't need the wifi/app control then I'd say a Storm or Typhoon controller would be a cheaper option and you can put the rest towards that controller. Honestly, all the bells and whistles of light controlling is more for your own enjoyment. Your livestock will be perfectly happy with a simple on/off cycle of your Kessil with a $1 manual timer if that's all you wish to provide. The Bluefish is by no means a "cheap" controller in comparison to the simpler manual controllers like the Storm/Typhoon so I'd say it's more a luxury than a necessity..ultimately the choice is yours.
I've done the do it right first time section in the article quite a few times. Especially with pumps and protein skimmers. You'll end up spending more money if you keep buying stuff you're ultimately unhappy with and planning on replacing in short order. If you don't have the money for an Apex you could always just use a cheap timer temporarily. If you're planning on upgrading in the "near future" I'd just get an Apex. You can run more than one tank off of it if you decide to keep the nano.
I have had mine online for a month. I run three kessils with the sunrise sunset synched to my local. When I synced it to Fiji, I was able to 'see' clouds pass over and rain storms. The storm feature is fun with lightning and thunder thru my wireless speakers. I like the ease of setup and the personal support from the programmer/ owner. There is another power module that enables me to also run two additional Ecoxotic pro's.
