Bottom fin of a trigger?

It can mean a number of things... I typically see my triggers do it for 3 or 4 reasons.

Aggression - Trying to threaten another fish or to "fight' off aggression from another fish. Basically it just looks to me like they are trying to look big.

Stretching - Sometimes they just are swimming lazily around, slowly stretch out their trigger and then go back to normal for no apparent reason.

Sleeping - They do this when they want to jam themselves into the rocks and sleep for the night.

I always call it their thinking fin. Mine often extends the top one when he is curious about something. He does it when he is checking something new out. In addition to sleeping and agression.

I think it depends on the fish. Stretching is the main reason for most of my triggers. The Niger, Bluethroat, and Indian all open their mouth wide and display both triggers.

My undulated only flashes triggers for aggression reasons. Also has the largest triggers, appears to almost double in size.

Lei trigger always seems to have the top trigger halfway out, but this is a bold and assertive fish looking for a fight.

Humu only does it to sleep.

agree with all of the above...
and just because they can, they do....
best group of fish ever...
