branching frogspawn question

I have had my branching frogspawn for about 6 mths now. It had 3 heads when I got it and now it is pushing for it's 7th head. I was reading through some posts and think the growth is kinda slow. I don't feed it directly other than turning of the return pump for an hour and throwing in some phyto and zoo-plankton. I tried to feed mysis and it would not take it. Just bounced off and caused the frogspawn to release slime. I have had reduced lighting for the last month but now have it under T5's. It is about 5" below the surface.

Are there any tricks to feeding these things? Is it hit or miss? Do you have to keep the food suspended near it for extended time or something?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Mine is under lower light, and grows even slower - mostly more extension, than new heads. Hammer in the same conditions grows new heads. Who knows why.

Mine is under 250wMH at the bottom of a 31" tank. It gets medium flow and doesn't extend as much as my hammer (which gets less light). I got it about a year ago, it was 7 or 8 polyps, its over 40 today. I do not feed directly and it has 10 or so sexy shrimp in it and my clowns "somewhat" host in it. It also seems to be the favorite sleeping spot for some of my smaller hermits.. they crawl in between the branches every night. This may be the reason it doesn't extend as much as it could but it doesn't seem to be stopping growth.

I do feed my tank twice a day so i have no doubt that its getting some of that food, I've just never target fed it.

I just toss a few pellets its way after I feed my fish. If it's hungry, it grabs them. Same thing with mysis. If it isn't hungry, it eventually releses them.

It loves the small pellets of Spectrum Thera-A.

I've had one for about six months w/ no splits. All the heads are almost grossly oversized, but no splitting. I got a different frag of frogspawn about 2 months ago and it has already split, and looks like its gonna split again soon. Both specimens are on the same level in the tank in the same general area. The one that won't split accepts all types of meaty foods and the one that split won't take anything. I don't know what is different between the two. I personally believe that they are slightly different species. The skeletons grow differently and there are far fewer knobs on the one that hasn't split.
