Hey everyone,
I kept discus pretty seriously for several years around 2000 and have been out of it a while now. I have a 115 gallon or so tank (60x24x18, with 24 being the depth) that I would like to start a reef tank with.
I want to do things the right way and I'm more than happy to start out slow and learn as I go. I'm in the researching phase now trying to figure out what options I need for each part.
I've been trying to learn about lightning and that's where my question is now. The tank is acrylic and has 2 rectangular cutouts on top. For that reason, it seems the ideal solution would have 2 LED fixtures, as one in the middle would lose some effectiveness to the acrylic that clouds up there. I would assume with that setup that I would have 2 peaks in the live rock under those 2 and a bit of a valley in the middle.
I do not know what types of corals I would like to have long term, so I would like a lighting solution that will not limit me down the road.
I've been looking at the AquaIllumination Hydra 26 and 52 HD lights. I like a lot of the features and it was recommended by the guy at the local store.
What size and quantity should I be looking at? 2 of the 26s? 2 of the 52s? How can I tell and make the right decision about what will be enough light and what would be overkill?
Any input, correction, or direction is appreciated!
