breeding fish

Was curious as to what fishes are currently being bred in captivity?? I have read the few posts here, and am purchasing the recommended book by Matthew Wittenrich, but am unsure what is successfully being done? Thanks. Bunker

Hi Bunker, I'll try to make a rough/partial list of a few of the most popular commercial species, but there are many others that are well-suited to hobbyist culture and not necessarily good for commercial culture, as Wittenrich explains in his book.

Clownfish (Amphiprion and Premnas)
Gobies (Elacatinus, Gobiosoma, Cryptocentrus...)
Dottybacks (Pseudochromis)
Blennies (Meiacanthus, Enchelyurus)
Cardinalfish (Pterapogon, Sphaeramia, Apogon)
Assessors, Grammas
Seahorses (Hippocampus spp.)
Dwarf Angels (Centropyge)

One way to find out which ones are currently being produced is to see which ones are available for purchase (liveaquaria has a special section for tank-bred fish, for example, but you can also find information on websites by ORA and Proaquatix).

Matt's book outlines quite a few different varieties that are possible and is a great book BTW :) To see his latest project (mandarins), have a look at his progress here:

Wow Matt--
what a great job at compiling that info. Thats a really good list.
Besides live aquaria, inlandaquatics & tropicorium also sell many captive raised animals they produce on site
