broken spines

I have had a healthy long spined sea urchin for about 4 months. Recently, he has shrunk to about ½ his size (reduced spine length) in a couple of weeks. I have been away and noticed this change on my return. I wonder if he is sick or has broken his spines because he wedged himself into a tight spot. I have other invertebrates that are healthy and all my fish and water parameters are excellent. I have posted this in the “new to the hobby” area and realize that this is where I should have gone for information and advice.

Now I have a whole bunch of questions. Will the spines grow back and will he be healthy? Should I separate the urchin from the trigger? If so that means that I will find a new home for the urchin as he likes to redecorate my tank.

Assuming the spines don't become infected, the urchin should be able to recover and regrow them. I don't think relations between the fish and urchin are going to get any better though.
