brooklyn aquarium

Hi,

Has anyone been to the brooklyn aquarium lately? I went to walk the boardwalk at Coney Island yesterday and figured I would stop in. I have not been to that aquarium in at leas 15 years. I was really shocked and disappointed. It seemed as if many of the tanks had algae issues, lots just had the same 3 things in it (purple urchins, jumbo snails, anemones). They had no coral tank like Riverhead. Actually the one big saltwater tank had fake coral.

there was also 100's of screaming kids running around, but guess you can't do anything about that.

It also doesn't help that they lost one of their most skilled and dedicated senior aquarists when he left to build and curate a much better aquarium on Long Island ;)

from what i understand it is now more geared towards research lab then an actual aquarium.

It's a sad place from an aquarists perspective but general public that hasn't the slightest clue how it's supposed to look for real is simply amazed and so are their kids.

Same goes to 3/4 million dollar setup recently enacted at ferry terminal in SI.

Fake corals, direct sunglight, dead fish, outbrakes of algea and wrong solection of fish.

Thanks Mike.
One thing that has to be kept in mind is some of the NYA is original from 1957 and they are in the midst of a major renovation. Funding can often be a challenge as well.
Hopefully the reconstruction will go well (many of their staff were recently at AMW to see the reef tank/ life support systems) as they are planning I believe a 6,000 gallon reef tank.
There is some new management on board as well and hopefully they will continue to make the necessary improvements.
At AMW, we occasionally get letters of concern and these are always welcome. If you see something of concern, it certainly couldn't hurt to send a letter and bring it to their attention.
