BTA anemone tank stocking list

Anyone have suggestions on what to keep with BTA's?

The set up.
40 gallon
20 sump with refugium
Mag 5 return
Mag 7 driving closed loop drilled in back.

I hope to have 2 maroon or saddleback clowns. In addition, I want to keep some ornate algaes in the tank. I am nervous about what else (I.E. corals) to put in the tank. I have read that chemical warfare between anems and corals are common.

I would do a pistol shrimp and goby pair, along with the anemone's and clowns.
Be careful about the drains for the closed loop, without the right covering's for them, they are an anemone killer.
Besides that, the algae will be cool.
I can't really think of any corals, i generally try and keep my anemones in a species specific tank, and have corals in a different tank just to avoid the possibility of chemical warfare. But thats just me.

IMO the BTA is the most flexible and forgiving anemone out there. they will host a wide variety of clowns, they are one of the easiest to keep alive, and they really aren't that toxic, making them easy to keep with corals, at lest IMO. if you haven't purchased your BTA yet i would recommend getting it from your LFS right when they get it in. I had to buy 2 before i got one that wasn't already dying before i got it home. the less tanks they have to get use to before they get into yours the better. And if you can get a RBTA then get one. trust me, i didn't and now i wish i did, they are so cool.

this can't be stressed enough. if you have to put a sponge around it or if you can absolutely cover it with LR rubble, many of these great animals have died in intakes.

My bta's have done fine with mushrooms, xenias, and the sort. Mostly soft corals, My sps never did too well with them, I think polyps will do fine too. As for fish I'm sure some damsels would add some nice color

I keep RBTAs in a mixed reef

It's a little risky, but I've never had any real problems... mine reproduce frequently enough at this point that I remove and sell any that start moving, so the ones that remain tend to be settled. I've had more problems with Xenia bothering my other corals than my RBTAs, but that's just my personal experience. I think you can put anything with them you want, as long as you let the anemone get settled first, and realize that you're running a risk of whatever's nearby getting stung. Good luck!

Thanks illcsd and others. Do you have any (wanted) algaes in your species tank? I like the idea of a goby shrimp pair.

So on the Closed loop. What type of cover do you use on them. I was thinking of burying my intake in a piece of live rock. I thought if I drilled a very porous rock and elbowed it in that may help.

The reason I am asking about stocking is because I know the 6 month wait to introduce the bta will be hard. I thought some patient, interesting stocking that is safe may help with this.

I like halameda because it doesn't go sexual like caulerpa. I don't really know alot else.
I am in the same position as you w/the closed loop for my 240, trying to figure out a guard for the intakes. i will let you know if i find anything.

there is a type of plastic cover that can go over the bulkhead on your closed loop intake. its nearly flush with the back wall of your tank, and with a million little holes in it. they just screw in. its been a while since ive had them. if you havent drilled your tank yet, put two intakes in. that way, it will divide the mag 7s suction between two intakes, instead of the full force from one.

i wish i had a picture of these covers, but i think theyre pretty standard. ive seen them at most stores.

if i were you, id keep macroalgaes out of your tank. unless its a solitary kind like bottle brush. but most kinds, once they get settled, will take over and be rather annoying from that point on. if you want the green, go with some green zooanthids. much better choice, and more tolerable once they spread.

So zoanthids are fairly safe. I guess if my bta or a future clone wanders the zoanthids will only get stung in small areas. So it could be a zoa/ bta tank.

I have already drilled but no water is in. I have two outlets and one inlet. I was going to reduce them with 1/2 inch loc-line. I guess I can add another hole. Just a beer and five minutes more time. lol


BTW: Cool to see some pnwmas folks in this forum. Nice to know there are experts close by.
