BTA concern

I am becoming concerned about my BTA because during the day it retracts itself instead being open and its only open at nights and I wonder why it doesn't stay open during the day ? It have been like that for past 2 weeks and I have had the BTA for a good 2 months now. The water flow is pretty good also.

My parameters is:
pH 8.3
Ammonia 0
Nitrite 0
Nitrate 5
Alk 4.87
CA 470

Thanks in advance
Mike

Can you tell us more about your tank, inhabitants?
My first guess is it is being stung by something that is open during the day, or being harassed by something.
Please post a picture of your tank, the anemone and let us know what you have around it in your tank ok.

Your Calcium and Alkalinity levels are both very high. I cant understand how your pH is so low in respect to the large volume of ions of CO3, HCO3 and Ca in your water. Both your dKH and Ca are very high, you must be very close to a full precipitation of the respective ions into insoluble Calcium Carbonate CaC03 in a "snowstorm". If your pH rises any higher i reckon that is exactly what will happen. Your dKH is greater than 14 and Ca+ is 470ppm. Just consider NSW has a composition of approximately 8dKH and 420ppm Calcium. Your levels are way above that. Though your organic pollution levels are fine for a BTA, i would say you have a significant ionic imbalance in regard to other trace elements and dissolved ions in your water. It would help if you listed what you use to buffer pH, dKH and Calcium as well as any trace element supplements.

List also your other invert and coral inhabitants especially soft corals or other anemone species if present. Give a complete stocking list of your tank and its nutrient export equipment and lighting and we can help a bit better perhaps.

hmm, doesn't the CA supposed to be in the range of 450 to 500ppm ?

What I have in the tank are:
-Tomato Clownfish
-PJ Cardinal
-Scooter Blenny
-Green Chormis
-Scarlet Hermit Crabs
-Cleaner Shrimp
-Peppermint Shrimp

I have no corals as of this moment I only have one BTA

I have the Floursuet daylight lamp and the blacklights (in blue color)

Is there any type of charts that the Alk's relationship with Ca? And doesn't the trace elements in tropic marin would correct the imbalances by conducting the regular scheduled water changes?

Thanks again
Mike

NO (normal output) is not sufficient enough for a BTA unless you have lots and lots of bulbs over a small tank. For a BTA I would at least get PC or VHO. BTA's demand the least amount of lighting for the clown anemones.

Can we see a picture of it please?

Your calcium is to high and so is your alk. Just don't dose until they will decline.
