I have a 55g reef system. I have an old 21 gallon tank that i would like to use as sump. i was wondering if I could put my old filters on it, i could also place my prizim skimmer and my heater on it (so i dont have to look at them in the tank). i was thinking i could use pumps some how to get the water to and from the tank. This 21 is a normal tank with no over flows. I dont understand how a sump works with out overflowing. I would be willing to do simple motifications to the 21 gallon. Is this possible? This would somthing like a refugium with my old filters and skimmers running on it, only it is below the tank like a sump. Please help.

Hey spbaden welcome to RC.Sumps are not that complicated when you have a visual guide to go by.Here is a link that will help you in seeing just how one works.Also on this websight is plans for making one.Since you already have a tank to make one with,you would only need to add some baffles.Yes you can put your skimmer and heaters in a sump,and you only one pump to return the water to the tank.An overflow box will return the water to the sump.Check out melev's sight, http://www.melevsreef.com/what_sump.html ,it is full of a lot of useful information on various equipment and subjects.If you have any further questions please feel free to ask.By the way,if you are new to the hobby,there is a new to the hobby forum here.Make sure to look thru that forum as there is a lot of info as well.Your questions will probaly get answered faster there.
