building a tank top

im designing a tank top for my 55g tank and i was just wondering if anyone knew what the best kind of material to use is?

i was thinking something along the acrylic /plexiglass range



also, where is the best place to get it from?



i have heard that lowes or home depot offer only thin sheets...and i need something with a little thickness to it



please let me know any information would be greatly appreicated

Unless you particulaly WANT to stop air flow and evaporation you should not use a solid material. Evaporative cooling can really cut down on your water temperature. I personally use a simple frame of quarter round, cut to fit the size of the tank frame opening with "bridal" mesh glued over it. That allows full light and air transmission but prevents livestock transmission!!!!
