building tank in wall question

How do you exactly do it? I don't want a gap caused by the 2x4's, I want the tank to be flush with the wall. But that would mean it would be hangin over the edge of the stand, wouldn't it?

Just looking for ideas on how to do it, pics would be great.

Thanks

a rimmless tank is what you need to start with. The tank will only have to hang past the stand 1/2" to allow for sheetrock. I would install a corner bead all around the sheetrock to clean it up. Then appy trim to the veiwing side to cover the gap between the tank and the sheetrock. Or...... the tank could be inset a 1/2" and fully rest on the stand and just use a 1/2" jamb extension to accommodate the trim. Hope this helps;) Did you get your schuran to work? maybe I can help on that as well as I have two in opperation for well over two years

My in wall has some ideas for you, just click on the red house for a look-see.. I did sacrifice the sides for the love of the game, but once they get covered in coralline, it looks fine.

Let me know if you have any questions...I'll be glad to answer what I can.

Thanks for the input guys.

SVTour thanks for the pics, Once you see it it makes it easier to understand.

redox I don't have the schuran up and running right now, I moved and bought a bigger tank. I hadn't figured it out, or maybe I had. I was just going through a hell of alot of bubbles and it wasn't helping my Alk. But it was a very heavily stocked 180 sps. I did buy 2 peri pumps though, so I hope when I set it up on this tank it will make a difference

Built my stand right up against the wall in one room flush with the bottom of the wall opening. Then cut the plywood top larger so that it covered the stand and the wall opening. Hope that makes sense.

We built our stand with a 'tongue' that stuck through the wall and rested on the 2x4 framing the opening. The tank slid right up against the front of the tongue and flush with the interior wall. I'm not a big fan of resting the front of the tank on the wall and jacking up a stand behind the tank because of the stress points it can put on the tank. Once everything was leveled up, we built a matching cherry frame and tacked it to the face glass with silicone to cover the seam around the tank.

As for the room behind the wall, here are a couple of shots. Our website has a few other pictures (see red house).

Have your tank built or modified to have coverage under the wall section. It will reduce the opportunity for water damage to the 2x4 above the tank. We had a 5" euro-style glass piece installed along the front to protect the wall where the tank goes through. I should have had it 5.5 or 6" to reduce the very slight amount of salt creep we get at the edge of the wall on the support room side.

Something like this;

Here is that framing around the flush face;
