after a few years of running a berlin style skimmeri, and only skimming a cup a month of skimmate, i finally broke down and hooked up a pm bullet1 skimmer with a eheim 1262 pump to my 58gl reef! and a new lesson was learned...
- never start your new skimmer with the air valve fully open!
i had foam shooting out the drain and filled my waste collector in a matter of seconds.
a few couple of minutes of tuning it in, i let it run all night, and was amazed how better and cleaner my water looked in my reef the next day, and the amount of skimmate that was collected the following day. nearly 1/2 a gallon was collected, and it was as dark as tea. the skimmer has mellowed out a bit, and seems to be set just about right where it needs to be.
now, my only concern is the change/swing in salinity, and how best to rectify that problem. should i consider dosing saltwater?
my salinity was at 1.026 two days ago, and is now at 1.023, so what do i need to do next?
