C. Collare with parasites?

I recently picked up a very nice C. Collare (Pakistani Butterfly) from my favorite LFS and promptly added it to my QT tank. Within a couple of days of observation, I noticed a couple of obvious signs of concern. First, I noticed a few of it's scales looked like they were lifting away from its body. I also noticed a couple of things either growing on or attaching themselves on its fins. These things are white with black "eyes". Today I did a short FW dip but the fish showed some severe stress and I returned it to the QT. Shortly after the dip I noticed a few stringy things hanging on the underside of the fish and its color looked a little hazy. Anyone know what may be going on and how I should treat this fish. It eats fine. It is the most beautiful Pakistani I have seen in person, I'd hate to lose it... Thanks. -Steve

BUMMER!!! Is this guy eating? My collare only ate live clams & I belive developed ick from a lack of nutrition .... It might have been a little stressed out by my coral beauty & sailfain tang (all were small)

I noticed that it would be "salted" in the am & by noon it was clear - this went on for about 2 weeks & it finally died ... I'm still a noob - prazi pro did help for a while. I also hear butterfies are hard to keep ( for guys like me at least ... )

what else is in your tank w/ the collare?

My Pakistani was in QT by itself eating blackworms and mysis, it died last night... I decided to have mainly Butterflies in my display tank and have 4 others in there at the moment, all doing quite well. I know they are more difficult to keep, that's what drew me to them. -Steve

Steve,

Pakistani are fairly hardy butterflyfish, but they are notorius for coming in with a fluke called Neobenedenia. This is an egg-laying species and very difficult to eradicate. Extended treatments of praziquantel at 2ppm will work - my typical treatment for active disease is to dose the Q tank, change 50% of the water after 48 hours, wait 10 days, repeat, wait 10 more days and repeat a third time.

Yup, my pakistani didn't show signs of flukes until 5-6 weeks into QT. Mine tolerated a 10 minute FW dip quite well though. This alleviated the immediate problem. I then did multiple treatments as Jay mentioned.
