How often should i be adding calcium to my tank? What product do you recommend
I havent added any yet. (i know its bad)
What problems will a lack of calcium cause?
If I add, will more coraline algea grow, or is that not related.

thanks

It will feed the coraline, but you only need to add calcium if you have inhabitants that are using calcium. You should test your tank to see how much Ca it's using. This will help you determine how much you should supplement.

There are a lot of recommendations for many different products. Most people drip Kalk, which can be made from Mrs. Wages Pickling Lime, available at Wal-Mart, and fresh RO water. However, this won't raise Ca, it will just help maintain it. It can cause a massive pH spike if you don't use a very slow drip, so you'll want to do a lot of research before you try it.

Before you add anything, you should get a baseline reading for your tank to determine if it's necessary to begin supplementing. If you're not using much Ca, you might be fine with regular water changes and no supplementation. I've run successful tanks w/out any supplementation. It just depends on your situation and preference.

According to Randy's articles, natural seawater is around 420 Ca. So, you'd want it somewhere in that neighborhood. The corals you have aren't high Ca demand corals though, so as has been said above, anything used would be replaced with water changes most likely.

Most softies, mushrooms, and zoa's don't use much if any CA... I'd think about the only thing using the CA would be the coraline...

I remember reading somewhere (a Sprung book maybe?) that CA in a Reef tank should be around 400 give or take, I've also read numbers going as low as 350 and as high as 450...

As was said before, I'd get a test kit and see where you tank is right now, and we'll go from there.
