I have been looking at getting the NIKON L120 and was wondering what you guys thought about it, or if there was a better camera in the price of $200-300. Thank you and happy reefing!
Tony

I suggest the Nikon P5000.
You can find it on Ebay for about $180.00
I`ve purchased 6 over the past few years for gifts.
Easy to use & you can get great results.
Here`s one of a Mandarin.
I have over a hundred thousand shots with that camera, half of those of all my fish & coral shots.
Here is an example.

Generally speaking, you want a camera that can shoot in RAW and not just JPG. White balance is an issue with our tank lights and having a RAW file is the best way to deal with it.

Also, it's important to realize that the weak link in most images is usually the photographer. Once you pick a camera you'll need to spend some time learning to use it properly if you want quality results.

As of now I don't know much about cameras but I am learning! Did you change the settings to make it so that the pictures are dark?

Black background

Black background

I shoot with a flash at 2000ths of a sec at F7.6.
The flash will light up pretty much the subject & none of the distracting background. I then lasso the subject , invert the selection & darken with levels.
All that, takes about 6 seconds.
I always shoot individual subjects with the camera directly against the glass.
The backgrounds do not have to be dark, although this shot was taken in a black backed tank.
The reflection I created for "dramatic effect.
