can anyone tell me what this is?

I know its not algae. I'm thinking it's some sort of sponge? Its growing fast and looks cool. When a piece breaks off it grows wherever it lands. I want to know what is it just because im curious.

If you like the way it looks, then it is. If you are asking if it contributes to some kind of benefit to the health of the tank, I would say it probably has a neutral overall effect.
