A 55g sump is fine just as long as you can fit it in your stand or wherever you plan to put it. As far as turning it into a sump I would go to your local glass shop and have them cut a few baffles to fit in the tank then just glue them in with silicon.
the bigger the better i say. a 55 on a 55 may be bit of overkill, but it's better than the other way. the greater the volume of water the easier it is to control pollution.
If your display is a 55 then you will need a HOB overflow or a Reef Ready tank.. Cause almost all 55s are Tempered Glass. "can't drill them" Not sure if you have already thought of that.. But as far as your sump being the same size as your display.. Not a problem at all.. Might not be needed but would work fine.. Imo I'd move up to a 75 Gallon over the 55. If you can aford two 55s a single 75 with say a 29gallon sump would be a much better setup.. Same length tank but you get the extra width.. IMO 12" wide is just to narrow.. A 75 has such a better foot print for a display..HTH

That is exactly what I am running right now.
I have a 55 gallon display (currently building a stand for the 90), with a 55 sump/fuge.
I have the hurricane overflows (can be found on ebay) 1200 gph, with a mag 9.5 return pump. Works perfectly!
