I got this one from Petco, they said it is a derasa, but I am not sure...

Sorry about the blurry picture.

Thanks!

Looks like a Gold Maxima, maybe a crocea, but I doubt it. Definatly not a deresa though. If you paid deresa price you got a good deal.

Thanks... thats what I was afraid of..

I only paid 35 for the clam.. but its gonna cost me a lot more than that when I have to upgrade to metal halides.

Place it as close to your lights as possible, what do you have now? They will be ok on the rock struture, although it is recommended to be in the sand.

I have one of those orbit sunpaq dealies, 2X65 PC on 30 gallon XH.. I know it is not even close to enough light for a maxima.

I tried to put him on the rocks close to the lights but he jumps off. Then I had him in a tupperware lid that I put some sand in and put on the rocks.. again, I came home and he had jumped off..

So now my suicidal little maxima is on the sandbed (with the tupperware lid underneath), which is where he's been for almost the entire time.. I've had him for 2 weeks, he looks healthy, no gaping, no bleaching, I feed DT 2-3 times a week.. I even think i see some new growth on his shell.

I would like to get him closer to the lights, but how do I get him to stay on the rocks? should I put him in an actual cup so he can't get out?

Any advice at all would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Alex

I was lucky enough to have a little nook in one of my rocks the clam fit right in, he attached in no time, and has been there ever since. Sounds like your guy is determined to stay on the sand bed. You might want to consider finding him a better home, with another reefer. Maybe trade for some lower light specimens. I'm sure this isn't what you want to hear, but it may be the best option.

If this is something you would consider, I would do a termos trade for it. PM me if interested, I have many zoos shrooms, and other less light demanding corals you might like.

Thanks, I will consider it.. I know thats probably the right thing to do, but its tough :-) .. Maybe I will try to get him to attach one more time..

also I have no clue how to ship, I'm in NYC..

being a gold max they dont need as much light, be sure to target feed the little guy with dts...but yeah halides are a must in the near future for that clam.. could get by with t5's but they are just as expensive...try puting it on a flat rock that will aid it in its atempt to atach...

whoa your petco has clams!
My petco hasn't gotten any clams yet, darn them.
How much did they charge for your clam?

They have clams but even they don't know what type they are selling. They are just trying to make a buck again at the buyers and the clams expense.

Yeah, the union square petco set up a 70 gallon or so reef tank with clams, SPS, lps and god knows what else... Everything is tightly packed under what appears to be PC lighting and a prizm (!) skimmer that wasn't even hooked up properly (the air tube was still hooked up to the primer setting). The corals were already starting to die..

The only reason I got the clam was because it was sitting underneath a large piece of live rock so it couldnt open, at first I thought it was just an empty shell... I figured it was better off lingering in my tank than staying in the petco tank. Still, he seems like he is doing well, tough little sucker.

I sent you my contact information. If you decide to part with the calm I'll be glad to work out a deal. I'm in the area and can pick it up.
