Can you guys give me some info on these. I got this little frag with only 2 polyp things and i wanted some basic info. Where should they be place, lighting, waterflow, should i feed it? ect. Mine are blue in the middle but i took the pic with the actinics on so they look green.

I have one that has 30 polyps. They will have little white tentacles that come out around the center of each. They are filter feeders so you will need to dose Phyto or any filter feeding food in the tank. It is a very hardy coral, but if you want you can spot feed it when you see it's tentacles. I have mine placed low in the tank with moderate water flow under a metal halide. They need med to strong lighting and med flow. Good luck

thanks ncny :D Do they grow pretty fast? I have it proped in between two rocks, but can i put in on the sand, it's kinda an ackward shape lol

i have one and it wont stop splitting at all. onces it finaly splits then it splits again i bought mine with four polyps and now there is like 15. its awsome i have them in the bottom of my 55 gallon in the sand. I have 210 whats of combined pc and NO lights. so im going to have to disagree on they need super bright lights.

well i already kinda of knew about them, but i got some conflicting info so i wanted to make sure on here and hear people experances with them.

a great book to buy is "aquarium corals" by eric borneman, (who, by the way, has his own forum here on rc called "the coral forum")
it will explain all you need to know about most corals that are available in the ornemental fish trade.
what i did was bought this book called "a giude to corals for the mini-reef aquarium" by dr. herbert r. axlerod. this book uses all the common aquarium shop names for corals, like "candycane coral" ( in the genus, Caulastrea) and then lists the taxonomic classification, which you can then use to find the desired coral in question in the more advanced reaserch guide.
both books are inexpesive in comparison to thier valuable information! aquarium corals was like $40.oo and the other one was like $15.oo
cheers

look framiliar? have any idea what it is? ive heard gorilla crab, but that doesnt tell me much.

hmmmm i don't remember what exactly the species, but mine is alot bigger lol and he would take a chunk out of me if i had him on my hand like that lol It's not reef-safe though, which you probally already know.

I'll probally end up buying that book it does sound pretty handy :D You guys say that the polyps split to multiply? In the pic of mine, does it look like the one on the right is doing it, he's a funny shape lol

i read, and this is a direct quote from the book"aquarium corals" (please dont sue me eric!) ;indirect bright light and moderate current will allow for the best expansion and health of Caulastrea.
basic meaning dont put it in the directly under a MH, or directly in the effluent of a power head or pump.

and you say your crab is much bigger than mine? like, how big?
i brought mine to my LFS to see if i could get anything for it and the owner said telling by the black tips on the claws, that it was a menace, which i already knew, and that all he would want it for was fish food. so i took it back home and it now lives in a tall glass in my fuge where he cant excape. i found him straddling a montipora digitata frag i had, and was eating it. thats when i put him in the cup

mine was probally that small when i got him, but he's growing really fast. I think if he gets big enough i'm going to cook him :D Ok i got the currage to put him on my hand, OMG that was scary, when you see huis claws you will know why :o Sorry about the pic quality, when your shaking from fear it's hard to get a good pic lol

in my fuge :D lol I want to see how big he gets he eats about 5 large peices of mysis everyday and as much macro as he wants. Got to get him up to cooking size :D

And I thought my daughter slapping at the glass was bad. I was just about to start this same thread. I am about to pick up a small frag of a candy cane coral this week as well. My lfs has one for $10 as well as a sweet bright orange zoo frag for the same price. Good luck with yours and I will keep you posted on how mine is doing and any tricks I learn to get it to grow.

If you look at the center of the polyp, you'll see one "mouth". I know when my polyps are going to split because another mouth will begin to form off center and the polyp will slowly look like it's going to pinch itself in half. My candy cane started with six polyps when I got it five months ago and it now has eight. It did great under my PCs and I just put up MHs three days ago. I'm hoping it'll begin to split more frequently as I'm noticing more mouths forming. Good luck! :)

Mine prefer low light and med flow and reproduce by, mentioned already the heads splitting and also by "melting" in which the head actually drips down. Then it will break off and a new head develops where ever it lands, it's probably polyp bail out, but...I had many new colonies start this way. They can be fed at night when their feeders are out with any small meaty food...good luck.
here is a pic of mine on the bottom under 250 14ks........
