Can someone explain why I should take out bioballs and the sponge filters for a reef aquarium. Someone explained that they filter too well and does not leave anything left for the live rocks to work on?

Isn't this a good thing?

actually in time the bio balls will create nitrates which are harmful to corals, and the same with the other media unless changed regulary. most ppl just run carbon through them and change it out every week or two

I thought bioballs created the good bacteria ( I forget if it was nitrite or nitrate) to neutralize the bad stuff.

yeah it creates good bacteria to rid nitrites but they don't remove nitrates which is the end of the cycle process and that is why ppl call them nitrate factories
