I was told that a canister filter should not be used in a reef tank cause that is what teh live rock does. They should be only used in fish tanks. What? Everyone else said you do. If that isn't true than could someone advise be of a good canister filter to buy. There are so many options!

There are so many options!

You got it. It just depends on your setup. Some use bio filters exclusively and others use varying degrees of mechanical filtration.

However, the mechanical filtration can work against you if it filters small micron and your corals feed on large plankton or spawn.

I have a skimmer. I am just setting up this tank so should I not use a canister? It is not a drilled tank and it is a 75g.

well I wouldnt say they're bad because of liverock. I usually look at them as possible problems because they dont remove anything from the tank. they'll trap detritus and other wastes, unlike a skimmer (which removes them from the water column). if you don't clean the canister often (couple times a month at the very least), that trapped waste will break down and could become a nitrate issue. Personally, I dont even like them for fish only tanks.

I see. Sory for so many questions but what are my options when it comes to filtration. I plan to have fish as well. A HOB filter uses activated carbon (right?) so would that be better than a canister?

if you have the room, a sump would be your best bet. you dont have to have a drilled tank to use one, but it is alot safer imo.

well, the hang on back filter does a similar thing, in my understanding. The carbon pad is still in the water column, and it will trap detritus in much the same way. It can be done, but the diligence of cleaning it out can not be ignored. In my opinion, if you want some help other than just doing water changes and siphoning stuff that collects on the bottom, a hang-on protein skimmer is your best bet.
