Canister Filter - Help/suggestions needed!

So as my erectus babies continue their growth going into week four, I'm looking at my current rearing tank and considering what to do in terms of adjustments for future batches. One thing I fought (heavily) this time was ammonia buildup. I'm combating that partly with a redesign of the tank interior, going with a kreisel setup inside the biocube (2.5 gal tank inside the 12 gallon biocube). Now, that said, I'm looking at what I can do to increase the performance and sustainability of the tank as a whole; to that purpose: canisters.

I'm a little limited on space right now (so can't really go for a full sump), so looking at either the Eheim 2213 or the Fluval 105. Both "should" provide enough added filtration to do the job of helping assist with ammonia reduction. Combined with the (limited) liverock I have in the tank, it should keep things from being so hectic next time. That said, what would be the best one to get? I know the Fluval has a lot of media options available to it, but then again, I (believe) you can add other medias to the Eheim as well. Chemi-Pure, etc. Which of these would be easiest for maintaining and helping in the reduction of ammonia buildup? Somewhat leaning to the Eheim 2213, but not sure its perfect for adding different medias or if one of the standard Eheim ones are great as-is for ammonia/nitrite.

Thanks!
