I have a 30 gallon and I had a question on filtration. Would a canister filter be enough filtration. I dont want to add a sump or a skimmer. I would be keeping a RBTA and 3 b/w clowns.
to be honest most people dont use a filter, just a skimmer, if you dont want a sump i would recommend a HOB skimmer. i think it is more important than your filter.
i have a canister filter on my 75 and have to clean it every other day just to keep the phosphates from building up. it is a lot of work but it keeps my tank really clean.
in my 10g nano i have a HOB aquaclear 50 filter that i modded to become a refugium. i also have a fluval 205 running some carbon and sponges to keep things clean. i change the carbon and sponges once a month to keep things ie water clear, phosphates, and all your parameters at a good level.
a lot of people with smaller aquariums and no sump/refugium use canister filters. i run gac and gfo in my fluval 105 24/7, change it out once a month or so. also adds about 600 gph of flow to the tank.
The canister is a waste of money. Just get a deep HOB filter, take out the media and fill it with rock and sand. You can even attach a light and add chaeto to make a mini refugium. An HOB protein skimmer would be good as well, even a cheap Sea Clone will work on a tank that size.
