Cannister Filters

canisters

canisters

Most people who keep "reef tanks" don't like canister filters. I am an exception I have 2 fluvals and they work well and are easy to clean. Cleaning on a regular basis is very important to keep them from becoming "Nitrate factories" I pull a lot of crud out of them every 2 weeks or less. They are a good way to run carbon, and remove gross particulate matter. I like the speed that my tanks clear up when i do maintenance. Just a minority opinion.

Eheim, but what do you need a canister filter for. Only thing they seem useful for is carbon...

Eheim for sure, but all I use mine for is carbon and water movement, I bought it for my FW tank when I had one so figured why not use it for vhemical filtration. All bio media is removed though, just a bag of carbon

Hello all -

So, if you were to buy a cannister filter, would you get an eheim ecco or a fluval?

Thanks. :)

Eric

A canister is fine. Eheim makes great stuff but be prepared to dig into the wallet........although I don't like the Ecco line. The 2226 is a good unit. Fluvals are easy to clean and maintain and you get a lot for the money. Just use the canister for mechanical and chemical filtration. Contrary to what others might tell you, a skimmer CANNOT perform all 3 types of filtration you need....so a canister will help. Good luck.:)

I use fluval 304 on my 75g to run carbon, and PhosGuard. The new fluval's are nifty, simple to clean and prime.

I agree
