Canon Power Shot S3IS

I have a Canon Power Shot S3IS camera that I'm trying to use to take picture of my tank and corals. I can never get any good pictures. I have tried the manual setting for setting aperture and shutter, I 've tried shutter priority and aperture priority. No mater what I do, the shots are always blurry or to dark. I think I'm not using the correct settings. Then there's white balance. I'm not sure how to use that correctly. The camera has macro and super macro, but the close up shots I get are bad. Can anyone help me out?

I have the S2IS. As far as the white balance aim it at your tank and go under the menu and go to custom and let it evaluate your tank. I also made a huge improvement in my pics when I got a tripod. Don't give up it has taken me hundreds of photos just to get a few that I liked. I have yet to produce an image like some of what I see here but I play with the camera every chance I get. Good luck
