can't connect with aquanotes

I have a ACIII and cannot seem to connect to the controller via aquanotes. I can connect directly to the controller using the ip address, so I know that part is working.

Any one have any tips to get aquanotes working?

Now for some reason, I am getting

"Run-time error '94""
Invalid use of Null

when I try to start aquanotes and the program won't start. I tried to uninstall/reinstall the program and it still won't work.

I am beginning to really dislike this program....Help!

jimsflies,
Please email me your 12 digit registration code, and the AquaNotes database aquaDb.mdb found in program files\AquaNotes\etc directory. Something is corrupt in the database.

Curt

I think I have finally connected to the controller with aquanotes. However, the program is crashing when I try to retrieve the data log. Curt, I will email you the info.

I also haven't been able to get the controller to send emails. This includes email commands sent using aquanotes, ip connection, and directly using the controller itself. I am fairly sure I have the user/pw, and server info in correctly. Any suggestions?

Here are the steps to follow to debug the email problem on the AC3:

Telnet into the AquaController:
In the start -> run box of your PC type ‘telnet 192.168.1.50’ or whatever the IP address of your AquaController is.
Login to the AquaController.

At the AquaController prompt type:
cons
1 maild
mail

If you don’t understand the debug messages please email the log to me, and hopefully I can tell you what is going wrong.

Curt

Okay...getting much closer now! Email is working and it appears the database is downloading correctly to aquanotes now.

In regards to changing the admin password and possibly setting up a guest password, can that be done from the aquanotes program or do I need to go through the controller directly?

I seem to be able to change the admin password only from the controller directly...maybe I need to restart something to get the change to take effect?

You need to change the admin and password on the ACIII under netsetup and choose "restart" onthe ACIII. Then program the same username and password in Aquanotes or you won't be able to connect. The admin and password in netset are the ones you will use to log into your ACIII from across the internet.

From what I learned last night guests are not permitted to log in unless you are running the webserver software. Correct me if I'm wrong Curt, but I see no way for guests to log into the Aquacontroller over the internet. So don't give out your username and password unless you want people mucking with your tank!

BTW Why is the CONFIG tab for the TCP settings located under "tank database"? Shouldn't all the settings to configure the software be under the CONFIG menu? With submenus like "Aquanotes config" and all the ACIII configuration settings under "Aquacontroller config"? Aquanotes is very non-intuitive. I find myself hunting for screens over and over because it isn't laid out very well. That's my only gripe... and the fact you can't get graphs from over the internet unless you are running the webserver.

There is not a guest account on the AC3 or AC3Pro web servers. The configuration tab is in the tank database window because each tank will have a different connection mechanism (tcp, serial, etc.). It would be easy enought to rearrange the menus, if that would make it easier for new users to set up.

I think one of the main problems with the current version of AquaNotes is that it has many options still available that are not used (like paging, modem dial-in, etc.) If these features were not expose the user interface would be much less complex, and I think that user confusion would be minimized. I've been reluctant to remove features, but perhaps now is the time to get rid of functionality that no one is using.

I guess I would agree that removing software function that is not supported by the hardware would be less confusing. Not sure if the other units support some of the stuff, maybe there can be different versions of the software or some kind of customized installation where all we have to do is select our model number.

It would be kind cool to have the ability for a guest sign in on the controller. Seems like that wouldn't be too tough to add to the firmware?

I'm sure the novelty of the controller will where off after awhile, but it sure is cool to click a button and have a light turn on and off...I'm easily amused. :spin1:

Curt, you've been very helpful and having this forum to get questions answered from you and fellow reefers is great.

Today is the first day of actually controlling equipment connected to the tank! I think I still have some email alert/program issues to figure out and my pH probe is reading way too low but I've come along way since last weekend.

Here's a pic...it looks like a big mess right now, but I'm working on a cabinet to mount everything in that will sit next to the tank.

Sort of funny when you compare that setup with mine as it sits! Big difference!

I wonder what all those switches go to if the controller controls pretty much everything in the tank? I thought about nice quick manual switches like that but decided they wouldn't be necessary or work well with the controller.

I would be curious to see other people's mounting of the controller and how they tidy things up. Please post pics. I might start another thread since its getting this one off topic.
