I have this clicking noise mostly about 5 - 8 am tank light gets up at 12
i hear clicking when i feed my fish too, he killed my 2 shrimp but i never seen it

yesterday i try to pull out all my 4 rocks from my nano tank but did not get anything out of it

today i decide to let the rock where i think the little animal lives in a bucket for 2 / 3 but did not find anything yes, i'm not sure anymore that it is in the rock

could it be in the sand?

Kinda, if the hiding spot is under a rock he might tuck in the sand for a bit. I found a mantis in seahorse tank 6 months after setting it up... It takes time. I used FW to flush him out. Pull wash rock out again, and slowly pour FW over rock. He should at least show himself.

i did try twice but nothing got out

on the right sight of my tank i have one big rock holes on the left 3 smaller one with holes and the other 2 don't really have them or are really small

the sound seems to come from that left side of the tank, in the back
where the rock i pulled out was

so or:
- is not in that rock
- is in the sand
- my hermit does that clicking sound

the sound is pretty loud and it like 3, 4, 5 in sequence one after an other no waiting between clicking

if is a pistol shrimp does it live in send or in the rock?

I've heard that pistol shrimps don't make multiple clicks in succession, only one. Not sure if that's true tho...I have many pistol shrimps and one hitchhiker Mantis in my 125G; the number of clicks at any one time is comical. I can catch the pistols all day long with a simple baited bottle trap (although I release them back into the tank), but not so for the mantis. We've given up trying to catch him, he's now a permanent fixture of our mixed reef LOL
