Can't keep seahares.

Anyone else have this problem? They seem to last anywhere from a couple days to couple weeks.

Two out of the three I had were split from their two holes. They also had plenty to eat.

split from their two holes? what do you mean - they were split bilaterally or were they bisected?

They have two holes. One at the rear and one mid to rear of their back. They were split hole to hole. I could see the "internal" shell of some sort.

Don't feel bad. Mine lasted a week then just laid there dead at the front of the tank. Was doinga good job then just gave up. Now I still have algae.

some can release toxins - best to be removed from display right after expiration.

Do you have an ID of the kinda of seahare you have/had? Aplysia californica is found in the market a lot but needs below 60 degrees to do well.

Many are cold water species - after doing some google searches i found some folks who had the same issues - seems the digestive system just gives out - or some type of irritated coelom causes rupture and death?

Always happens to me too. I read some where they usually are collected when they congregate to spawn. unfortunately they also die shortly after spawning.

They do have a relatively short life span, but many of them need a very solid supply of algae to eat.

What species are you trying to keep?

The big ones (5"+) or the little ones (1-2") ?

The only luck I've had is with tanks that are so algae ridden you can't see the rock under it all. Looks more like a lawn than a marine tank. As soon as it's mowed down, they tend to drop off.
