Can't seem to boost magnesium

Hi everyone,

So i've recently discovered that i need to pay closer attention to my Mag and Calcium levels (i was boosting Kh but not the others). So, last week i got the stuff to get them into the normal ranges and started adding it to my tank. I got magnesium up to 1260 on Sunday, and then last night i measured and it as down to 1200. I thought that was strange, but i just added more, about 10 tsp to my 80g total system volume. I measured again today, and it's down again to 1170. I did do an 8% water change today using Instant Ocean Mix, but it seems very odd to me that mag levels were that much lower so soon.

Kh has been stable at 10, although i dose this imprecisely. It could be that i've been adding a little more baking soda than normal lately (i plan on doing this more exactly going forward). I'm not certain this has happened, but my imprecise dosing is coming back to bite me now, as i can't say for sure what's happening here.

Calcium also was at 420 on sunday, then 390 last night, and now 370 this evening.

I have only 6 small frags in the tank. All pretty small at this point. My levels were very low before i started dosing last week. 300 calcium, about 980 magnesium. Is it possible that everything was just starved for nutrients and is soaking them up fast right now?

I'm holding off on dosing further until i can figure out what is going on.

Buy brs mag mix or look up randy's alk, cal and mag receipes. You can google them easily.

Once every few months, my mag drops below 1300. I do weekly wc. So i just dose mag mix by hand. Everything else is by doser

If ur mag is out of balance, it might cause unstable alk and calc

Yeah I got some seachem magnesium and have been doing since since last week. It was up to 1260 on Sunday (from 980 on Wednesday), and now it's started declining rapidly again. I'm using a new salifert test kit
