Capelin Fish Roe

I've noticed that many of you feed capelin fish roe that you've picked up at Asian grocery stores. I've looked at every store that I can find, yet all of the roe (sold for sushi) is treated with food colouring, sugar, salt, MSG, etc.

Are you folks feeding this same stuff and just rinsing the heck out of it before feeding?

Thanks.

I recommend shad roe. It is fresh and available this time of year, though only for a short time. I freeze enough to get me through the year. It is the best food I have found to start new fish eating. Loaded with fats/oils and nutrients.

The way I have gotten Capelin roe is by buying the whole fish (which aren't that big, a bit larger than sardine size). Generally it is just the females that are sold on the market.

I buy shad roe at the Local pathmark/superfresh. I've also seen it at albertsons/acme markets. Usually found in March. It may be an East Coast thing like scrapple. I grew up eating it.

Unfortunately, getting OVA or Reef Caviar shipped to us up North is virtually impossible - there are too many restrictions for us.

So, can I take it that no one uses the treated capelin roe?

I feed capelin fish roe from the Asian markets as a treat for my fish. I store it in my freezer, and just dump half a spoon into the water column during feeding time.

I didn't think about the food coloring and additives, though. Now that I think of it, I can't imagine how my phosphate levels would be without GFO and bio-pellets. I'll have to keep an eye out for shad roe (never knew it existed... is it the same orange color?)

so where does one pick this stuff up in ottawa or montreal or toronto?

lol?

<< this guy needs instructions meant for a 10 year old... geesh! :0

Tim,

Lapointe's didn't have any eggs or female fish with eggs in stock. They will, however, grab some eggs for me the next time they get some. They do have Shad coming in on their next order and will keep an eye out for a female for me.

If/when I get some eggs, I'll drop you a line.

Jerry
