i recently installed capture nx2. i have a ton of questions i will try and pace myself though.

i took picture in raw format on my nikond40.

how do i convert them to nef files using capture?

If I understand what you think you said.

If you took them in raw, they are nef files. By capture nx2, I assume this is a video capture, which probubly can't decode the nef file. The software that came with your camera, (picture project), can decode the file. You may have to convert it to jpeg before capture can use it.

nikon captrue nx2 is the editing program im trying to use. its my understanding this program is good for converting nef files to 16bit TIFF file?

If that's the case, does capture open when you put in your card or hook up your camera? I don't know that software you're using but if no one else chimes in, I'll try to help. Like I said though, nef files are raw files.

no my computer recognizes the nikon. then my photos are place in a folder. then capture nx2 is started off my desk top. and the photos are retrieved from the folder through capture.

Which program are you using to put the pics in a folder? Is your camera set to take "Raw+JPEG"?

This is from the website. This should be loaded on the pc also.

Nikon Transfer
(included in Software Suite/Software Suite for COOLPIX supplied with Nikon
digital cameras/free download available)
This software enables easy, efficient image transfer, making it useful for organizing
image workflow, even for business. You can transfer images captured by Nikon
digital cameras or stored in memory cards. You can also add labels, ratings and
XMP/IPTC at the time of transfer for efficient sorting of images at a later stage in
the workflow. Double transfer for image backup is also available. Applications to
start after image transfer can be selected for smooth operation.

Jesse wow the more i research editing the more complicated i find it can be. what you are suggesting sounds like where i need to start. i owe ya one.

If it makes it easier, just pull the memory card and dump it into a card reader. That should read like a regular drive and you can copy the .nef files off of it onto a disk. Then use Capture NX or Photoshop to edit as necessary. I always archive the raw just in case I need them.

its been busy for me with work today but i did get some things figured out. i explored nx2 and made some light enhancements. i was able to convert my file and save it as a tiff file. now i want to check out lightroom is there a trial version of that?
