Carbon??

DID I SOUNDS SMRT??
Hey guys....I'm might start running carbon. Do a lot of you guys use it. Whats the major advantage besides taking the yellow out of the water. Also how much should I run for ~100g water volume. Also do you leave it in for a few days or a long time.

Thanks

I run about 4 cups on my 240 once a month for 3 days... good to run once a month... which is per Kent Marine's instructions

I put it in a filter bag on top of the sponge that is the only mechanical filtration in my sump. Right before return pump chamber. I run it 24/7 360 and change out every 2-4 weeks when I think about it. Clearer water and no chemical wars between corals.

Same here put in the filter bag float it in my sump.. shake it every other day and change it every month... so far so good...

Well mine if right before the last baffle. Since I have two returns I am flowing around 2100 GPH and all of it has to pass throu the carbon to go under the baffle and get to the return pump. I think that is pretty high flow.

Just put it where the water flows just like Gmax said but you have to keep shaking it every other day so nothing get stock inside... thanks

I run it periodically. The benefits to me are piece of mind that the few softies and zoos that I have can emit toxins and the carbon should suck it up. I run about 8 - 10 cups in a box at the output of my chiller. A word of advice, if you use cheaper carbon or any carbon really, ( I use the cheap kent stuff) rinse very thoughouly with water. Without a good rinse, spikules will float around in your water column. If they settle on colonies they can make them very unhappy.

I use it only every two months. I let it sit in there for a few days too and then I take it out. I use activated carbon for reducing some toxins of the corals and other bad ingredients.

To make only the water clear, I often use Easy Life - it's softer for the corals than activated carbon, which often reduces trace elements rapidly.

Especially Xenidae have sometimes problems with the usage of activated carbon.

But if you do regular water changes (20-30 % at month), it wouldn't be a problem.
