Cephalopod for a 98G reef tank? Or only coldwater tanks?

Can I keep a cephalopod in a 98g reef tank? It's hooked up to a 210g system, just the display is 98g. 36" x 25" x 25".

The display tank is open top with a pendant, so I doubt I can get an octo since they're known to escape tanks easily.

I was looking into a cuttlefish or something interesting like that, but this will be a reef tank.

I do have a 1/5hp chiller, but that's just to help battle the California heat.

The entire setup isn't put together yet, I have all the equipment in the works, but was looking at options.

Any cuttlefish or other cephalopod you'd recommend? Or should I just stay with those nemos =P hehe.

I just did a bunch of reading on tonmo about Sepia bandensis.

Looks like they can live in 78-80 degree waters since that's where they come from.

I'm thinking they'd be perfect for my tank, though short lived. I always wanted something aggressive in my tank that was very interesting, this may be perfect! I'll keep my clownfish etc. in a prop tank ;)

Anyone have any suggestions about bandensis?

sorry never kept them.
I kept the cooler water species.

if you put a cuttle in your reef tank anything that stings will be a problem (or so they say) things like some types of corals.
larger fish will eat them and smaller fish will be eaten by them.
anything crawling will be eaten (hermit crabs are the exception)
Good Luck
:)

I won't have any other tankmates other than snails, maybe a few hermits.

Doesn't every coral sting? They're pretty hardy creatures, I don't think they'll get stung by a zoanthid or anything.

eh
In the ocean they have room to move. In a tank when they jet around I can see where they might run into things they would not normaly.
eh I just keep one green star polyp so ive never had a problem. Its just on the list of "risks"

I'm not sure what to take from your posts. There isn't any solid proof of what corals can't be held with these guys, and about oceans to move, every single reef tank or saltwater tank out there is very unnatural and animals can't move in them. So what you're saying can be applied to everyone's tanks.

Thanks for the suggestions nevertheless.

??
What im saying is that your right, In the open ocean Stingy things arnt a problem for a Cuttle. In a tank with not as much open space it becomes an issue. If they get startled and jet back ward into a clump of coral and they sting the poor guy it might be an issue.
From what I have seen MOST (not all) reef tanks look really crowded. which is fine for a reef tank.
This (for me) goes hand in hand with the butt burn problem. If your cuttle is spooked and jets into a wall or rock to hard you get damage. I am quite sure that if you have a particularly aggressive coral that it would be stressful at least to run into it.

Im a ceph keeper not a reef keeper. So I am not sure on which corals are a problem or if i have thrown corals in with anenomes. I have one green star polyp in with my cuttle because its said to be hardy and not sting.

Good Luck with your ceph

I know, I understand. Thanks.

I'll try them out with corals. I'll only have SPS, no euphelyia (like frogspawn and galaxia)

Blue Ring

Blue Ring

I dont recomend blue ring octos for even the most advanced keepers because of the inherant risk of a fatal bite, but I have seen a fellow reefer keep one in his sps mixed tank, and even had video footage of the critter moving around in his tank. From what I saw and having kept Octos for several years it was appearant that it was not stressed or injured by the soft corals in the tank. He just slowly moved around the tank exploring, looking for things to eat. Very cool, check Tonmo for the footage.

yeah I've seen both of those sites.

I guess I'll just have to try a few out to see how they'd do.

anyone know anywhere I can buy cuttlefish babies / eggs?

:(
Tonmo had a contact for guys selling Bandesis eggs but Tonmos been down for 2 days
I wonder if.....
