Chaeto issues

I got a chunk of chaeto a couple years ago. I had it under a flourescent "grow" light and it never did anything. I switched lights a couple months ago. Now I have algae growing on the chaeto and on the walls in the refuge but the chaeto still isn't growing. Is the cheato dead or would it disintegrate if it was dead?

It should disintegrate. What does the other algae growing on it look like?

It just kinda looks like the chaeto is getting fuzzy, hairy, blurry, you get the idea.
