Chaetodontoplus cephalareticulatus: The Orange Face Angelfish

Just thought I'd share, I found this really cool angelfish on reef builders. I've never heard of it before. It looks like a hybridization between Chaetodontoplus septentrionalis (Tawanese blueline angelfish) and Chaetodontoplus melanosoma (Black velvet angelfish). You guys know anything about it? Its called Chaetodontoplus cephalareticulatus or the Orange Face Angelfish

The reef builders pics wont post for some reason, the url url shows up as www.************.com/ image url blabla.jpg instead of www.************.com/ gah! it did it again for some reason you cant post an img from or a link to REEF BUILDERS >COM! WHY CRUEL WORLD????? any reason for that?

anyways

The fish you are showing photographs of is Chaetodontoplus melanosoma from Indo and the Philippines, not C. cephalareticulatus which ranges much further north, even though I don't believe cephalareticulatus to be a valid species.

That "grade c", whatever that means, likely has different genetic input than the normal "maze" angel. T

I am EXTREMELY confused!

What exactly is a grade C, grade B......... Grade A?

We are not talking about captive bred "selectively" bred clownfish here. These are wild fish that are an incredible product of evolution and nature, there is no need to place a grading system on these fish......................... :(

Oh, I get it!

With these Chaetodontoplus angels, the different species that make up each individual fish equates to the letter grade it gets :rolleye1:

It has to do with the genetic makeup as well as the coloration mix of the angel. For example grade C in the picture that I posted is one that had no bluelines, no blue spots, and a bright orange face with a pitch black body.

Correct it is not captive breeding, but a grade C is not the classic maze coloration with the full blown Supermale colors. Grade A is the highest price for maze as they are superior coloration and best mix of what people would look for in the Maze.

Superior Coloration? Is this not very subjective and based on opinion? Also, what is the "classic maze coloration"?, and what exactly do people look for in a Maze angel?

I just do not understand, I guess?

Here is a picture of 2 different fish offered as "Maze Angels". The first is graded lower as the coloration is almost Personifer like with the orange face

It was actually the first fish that sold and it sold FAST!

This picture is of an 8" super male with the "classic" maze coloration. It has the orange face, the bluelines fading to the black back with the bluespotted rear section. It is the quintessential "Maze" angel.

Is it clearer?

I understand, I am just being difficult. ;)

I just do not like putting the letter grades on these fish. To me the first fish is just as, if not more interesting than the second. Does the fish pictured second have more blue lines? yes. Does that make it "better" than the first?......................

BTW, thanks for the pictures Chris! Both fish are stunning.

The grades are based for suppliers. As you have pointed out it is all relative to the people that are buying the fish. The first fish was offered for less money and it sold almost immediately. The second sold within the day for a lot more...

Is it better? Maybe. Is it what everyone is looking for? Nope. Do all angel fanatics love them either way for different reasons...absolutely.

Which one did I want and almost buy? #2 all day everyday...
