Chalice Question / Help

I have a chalice frag that has been in the tank for 3+ months. Location in the tank has stayed the same during this time frame. Did go from 250W to 400W in a 27" deep tank with the lights about 8" off the top of water. I noticed today there is a small area on the frag that is showing a bit of white skeleton. It is hard to see in the photo, but was curious of others opinions and if there is anything I should do. Thanks.

I see a little bit. Since u upgraded to high watt..which mean higher par level could bleach it. I would move it down a bit and wrk from there. Move it up slow after each week. Good luck

Btw nice chalice..what is it called where can I get one?

Thanks. It is actually on the gravel now, but I moved it to a more shaded / less direct light area a bit after posting. I do agree, it looks more like a bleached area as it is just pale, not actual skeleton poking through.

The chalice is the WWC Flaming Phoenix. Here is a better photo of it.

Nice piece... was it pricey?

So the chalice has gotten worse and bleached out more around the edge. I have moved it to an area that is getting hardly any light at all. I am curious, if I were to frag it to remove this area, what is the likelihood of success with such a small piece? Any other approaches I should entertain?

I put mine under direct shade from a rock when I had problems with it (literally under a rock bridge). It worked for me, but I dont know enough about chalice coral to say thats good advice for all chalices.

I have moved it to the sump, which is just a tank with a couple pieces of live rock. It only gets a little spill over from the frag tank. I keep going back and forth on riding it out more or fragging it.

I think fragging it is probably what I would be inclined to do if it were mine. Have you fragged it before? Did it ever show any sensitivity to being bumped or scraped (assuming this happened in shipping)?

No, we changed to 400W bulbs and one day I noticed a white spot. I moved it to a less intensive area and it has only gotten worse. I have never fragged it.

Honestly the more I think about it, I would say leave it alone for awhile unless the bleaching becomes aggressive. Chalice seem to take a little time to heal, so maybe a steady home, low flow, low light, and being left alone, might be what the Dr. ordered. BTW that is an amazing chalice, I hope it makes it. Id be pretty interested in a frag after it heals up and starts growing again.

I have a few types of chalices. Almost all of mine will take direct light from my LEDs and I can even place them on the rocks but with my rainbow chalice I had to start it off to the side of the tank and in a shaded area. I then moved it to a more direct area but more shaded and have finally been able to bring it out into the light after months of moving very very slowly. It also bleached if I moved it too quickly. It might just be a common thing with rainbows that they need awhile to adjust to higher light.

Chalice to chalice varies. Some love high current some love low. All mine are in high flow, medium light. They sit between my acros and montis. Growth is good but slow compared to the other LPS I have.
