Changing from tap to RO/DI

I have had my saltwater tank since 2006, and now, after a disaster from Green Haired Algae, I have started to do weekly water changes with RO/DI water, 40% first week and 20% water changes per every 7 days. Going on third week now. All parameters are good (finally) Mag a little high at 1400. Should I change the substrate ( a little at a time over a long period of time) ? Or is there anything else I should be worried about? besides doing damage in my tank by using tap water, which I regret now.

Nothing to worry about. Softies like zoas that thrived in dirtier water may slow in growth. Chances are your rock and sand will be leaching that stuff back out for a long time. You could replace sand slowly and take a piece or two of rock out at a time and cook it. Or just run gfo and let it suck up the phosphate as it leaches back out.

Thank you, will keep the GFO going and use RO/DI water instead of tap water.
