cheap macro and whats the best mm to get

If I may add, I've made a list of the most commonly-used macro lenses for the Nikon mount:

Check KEH and Ebay.

Picked up my Sigma 150/2.8 off Ebay for $400 a few years ago and it was in NIB shape. Guy had it a few months and don't think he ever used it. Best $400 I ever spent.

I don't believe your camera has screw drive. That means all the lenses that say screw won't auto focus on your camera. Most macro work is done with manual focus anyway. The Tamron 90 is highly rated and I've owned a Sigma 105 and it wasn't bad. This is what I use.

I know a lot of people that start with the cheeper ones. Normally they end up with what I have. It costs a bit more to get there, but they find after using a friend's Nikon 105, what they have just doesn't feel the same. It depends one how anal you are. No one knows that but you.

I used a Sigma 105mm on my D5100 when I had it. Excellent lens, the D5100 has no AF motor built in so you need to make sure the lens you buy is and AF-S if you're buying a Nikon. Older AF-D's won't AF. IMO I'd go with at least 90mm focal length as a 60mm won't have enough 'reach'.

In the UK the Sigma is a bit cheaper, not sure about over the pond where you guys are. If you want to see some sample images from it there's posts by me in this forum.
