Anyone have any spare cheato? I need some and DH will be in Collierville in the morning, then Somerville for the doc, then back home to Millington (64 to 385).

Or I can pick up almost anywhere during the week.

Thanks,
Trish and Adrian. :fish2:

Chaeto and kenya tree coral are always overstocked and free at my house! (just off I-40 Exit 6, Warford Road).

Ok, then why are people telling me to put it in my first chamber, hm??? :)

Oh, Chamber 3 is now FULL with the new pump. :) Thinking about some rock frags for chamber 2. Ideas on that? Heater is already in there, but there still plenty of room for some rock frags.

Basically I'm trying to figure out what are the best possible things I can do the next few weeks while the tank settles back down, and has gone through a couple of larger than normal water changes.

If you want to come by and see how I have a "fuge light" on my nanos you welcome to. So far I havent found a camera. Basically the black on the back of your tank is either paint or a sticker. Not sure which on a BioCube. You scrape that off in the area of the chamber you are going to put chaeto in and then attach a light to the outside of the tank so it shines through the back glass. You want to use a bulb that is around 6700K. I use 13W PCs in an electrical box.
I would put the heater and chaeto in chamber 1. The false floor in there comes out if you push down on 1 corner. LR rubble under the false floor in chamber 2 then filter media (carbon, chemipure, purigen, sponge or filter floss) on top of the false floor. Clean the LR rubble off with a brush before you put it in there so the little pump filter sponge doesnt get clogged. Most people cut the wall opening between chamber 1 and 2 so it is even all the way across to get more flow going.

Danke, Scott!! I was wondering..on the cube, the"overflow" is in chamber one, the slats being up very close to the lights, easy for me to see into the charcoal filter, etc. Still too dark? Require gobs of light?

Can I live with cheato? Is this something Yoda would say a young Jedi must have?

Trying to think of any "relatively" easy improvements while I'm cycling the tank again for a while, oh, that also won't P** surviving Nemo off. ;)

Guess that's what I'm going for here. I read about all the things you guys are doing, and wonder, "Do I need to do that to?" And I pour through my books, and more through the forum, etc.

cheato will help thats for sure cant hurt. it does need light a clip on light 13 watts or so will do . but get the one from sperry hehe.

there are alot of ways to do a tank everyone does it differant someway or another .
for me i try try to find simple is a good way to go most of the people here dont do to much (in the reef club here anyway) others get all the stuff they think they need and really dont.
the more simple you can make it the better i think.
Jay has been doing this a long time and his set up is simple and easy to do he has larger tanks. but still if you want to know how to do it and not have to do alot all the time hes the one to talk to .
if you go to his house to get some cheato . im sure he will assit you in what ever you need to know.
when i talked to him and looked at his tanks i said heres proof you dont need all the things other people say you need.
from what i get from him all he does is dose his two part every morning and add kalk to keep his reef steady. of course cleaning and such as we all have to do.

Yep, everyone has a different philosophy on how to set up their tank. I like the DIY moding that can be done on the nanos. That doesn't mean you have to do any or all of them. It really depends on what you want to do, are comfortable doing. Some people make nanos a lot of work testing, dosing and cleaning daily. Others like me dont, I clean my glass, rinse the filter media and empty skimmer once a week. Do water changes every 2wks. Dose 2 part every morning. Test once or twice a month when I think about it.
Chaeto will do a lot as far as using up excess nutrients / preventing nuisance algae. It doesnt need "gobs" of light but the problem with just using spill over light is that it only reaches the top part of the chaeto. You need to light more of it. Think of a house plant that only gets light on 2 or 3 leaves. Some people just drop a small water proof light into the chamber, I have misgivings about putting lights under water though. I have misgivings about jumping out of perfectly good airplanes and getting on ships that sink on purpose too but people do it all the time.

Thanks guys. I think the one thing I've learned from a lot of you, and "locals" at area LFSs is that there is a HUGE variation in what people do and don't do, and I have seen equally stunning tanks with the bare minimum done, to those that every gadget, mod, etc. on the market.

I am realizing that I CAN keep it simple, or at least more simple than I originally thought, and still be successful. And that's reassuring. In the beginning it really is easy to get overwhelmed, overloaded, and to try to overthink everything.

Thanks for that reminder guys. That's why I come here.

(Psst..I jumped out of one of those perfectly good airplanes once. Oh, but I can also safely take off, fly and land one too. ;) )
