cheato - thick mat rather than loose clump

I bought some cheato from ABC a while back. It was a nice, loose clump that grew well, I trimmed a few times to give other folks, etc. All was good.

Over the last couple of weeks I've noticed that's become a pretty thick mat. It doesn't seem to be growing like it was, but it doesn't seem to be unhealthy at all either.

Is this normal? Anyone seen this before?

I remember in St James fuge it was a huge mat rather than a ball. I think it grows like this because of the way the light it. It wants to consume as much light as possible and there is no light on the bottom of the ball so it concentrates its growth at the top of the water.

right , I also have it growing around my intake on my sump as a flat turf grass... It is dependent on surface and light
