Check it out! Cheap MH lights

NO WAY...halogen lights have the wrong spectrum., i believe, and far too much of thier energy output is in heat. stick with flourescents and the proper MH's....seriously.

Great reference for DIYs. Thanks, and have fun with your lights! You can never have too much, or can you? JK
thanks,

Rick

i think the housing, reflector, and ballast could be used... but not the bulb unless you like 4000k color, look at the bulbs they arent the right color but i am sure you could replace the bulbs with another kind.... ahem (reefmax.com - 35.99)

if you open the instruction manual it says this:

Lamps are not interchangeable! Make sure you replace with exact type and wattage of original lamp.

does this mean we can't use aquarium bulbs?

i would think same wattage but diffrent color step up to 10K 14K or 20K

I went ahead and sent them an email, and asked if higher temp bulbs could be used. Will see what happens!

i have a ballast kit just like these ones shown for 50 bucks, i bought it from a guy that just got a new 10k screw socket bulb, 400w, it works fine. a little cumbersome for install but not bad if you dont mind doing some mods, heck this is a DIY thread! Cheers

Ok! I got some info back from the company Here it is! Yes you can use diffrent PAR and temp bulbs, Just match base and wattage.

Thank you for contacting E-conolight. As long as the wattage and base type match what the ballast can hold, the temperature does not matter. The temperature just determines the color of the light. The higher the temperature/lumens, the brighter the light. I hope this information is helpful to you. I go to the sylvania warehouse and buy the 400W ballast core, the ignitor, the starter, and the case. Grand total 110.00 bucks... :) A monkey could wire it up...
