check valves

redundancy is always a good thing when your tank is concerned. i agree the swing style is far superior to the springers.

Check valves are a bad idea, they can and more importantly will fail. Redundancy is good but that means designing your overflow and returns so you get minimal backflow, drill siphon break holes in the returns and always leave enough room in your sump for worst case backflow. All can be accomplished without mechanical devices that will fail and flood your home.

I appreciate all your thoughts on this. From these posts and others I have received on a different thread it seems that using check valves on my return lines that would run through the bottom of my tank would involve a lot of risk. I just don't want to go there. I don't want to put my return lines through the top of my tank either because they take up too much space. I guess I will have to think of something else.

I advise if you go with a check valve go with the George Fischer ones from Savko.

You can easily clean the gunk out as it is accessible
