Chiato algae

The base of my tank doesn't block the light coming out from below. I have some chiato algae. Is it okay to light it for only 6 to 7 hours, like from midnight to 7 am? The light bothers me and I'd like to do it when I'm asleep.

firstly i think you're referring to chaetomorpha algae commonly called cheato, i think that you misspelled that. With regard to lighting it at night many people do this to avoid excess light and to help keep the ph swing of the night/day cycle less. I think you would be good with lighting it for about 10 hours a night, lets say from 10:00pm to 8:00 am or so to avoid the light seepage during the viewing hours. I personally keep mine on 24/7 but the above method also works well. Good luck!
