Chiller for a 300G?

I'm trying to decide if I am should sell my Arctica 1/3HP chiller or keep it for my next tank. (right now I'm "between tanks" :))

The tank will be approx 300G.

Is 1/3 HP enough or I need a bigger? The Arctica is supposed to be pretty efficient.

Depends on your pumps, lighting, and if you have air conditioning or not. On my 300 gal 1/3 wasn't enough. Had to go to 1/2.. Now I have a 1 hp on my 500. Be sure to have a dedicated 15 amp circuit for the chiller, it will spike about 13 amp on start up...

depends on how much porn you watch in that room..lol..depends alot on flow rate....dont go overboard...i had a client that HAD to have a 2hp 220a chiller for his combined 1000gl sps system in his basement...all it did was create a TON of noise and ran for 2mins every 30minutes....20+years keeping fish and i never had to use a chiller...

I find that sps like the water to be very stable.... Myself, a chiller is a must. this includes a back up chiller in case the first malfunctions. I've got thousands of dollars in livestock. Not to mention all the time to grow. again myself, i find cutting corners only lead to problems down the road. and a lot of why's??? Sizing a chiller isn't really difficult. Armando, if you list all your equipment we could size it on the forum....

ricks thanx.

Right now everything is pretty vague, since I have yet to find a house to move to and see what's a good size depending on the space i got.

But overall, I think my goal is to have a 72x30 (or 36) x24 with 3x250HQIs (maybe 4). The return pump is a Dart or the next bigger one. Everything else doesn't add much heat (Tunzes, skimmer, etc), no closed loops.

my 300

my 300 has a 1/3 hp chiller with 2000 watts of light and about 17,000+ gph flow with many pumps. It doesn't need to work hard or long to keep my tank at 80. I also have fans that blow across the top of the water which turn on .8 degrees before the chiller this helps quite a bit. It reduced the amount my chiller has to run greatly. Sometimes the fans will even stop the temp rise and avoid the chiller going on at all. I recomend a drop in chiller so you don't have the added possibility of the feed pump going bad and frying the tank.
