Chiller Temperature

I've just setup my 1/10 Hp .What would be the ideal temp. setting? Since Sunday, I set it up to 82. Before having a chiller, my temp goes down at 76 at night then about 82 during the day. After, I've set up the pump and chiller, I noticed that my nigth temp rose to 80's. Is this because of the pump upgrade? I used to have a RIO 1700 pump then I replaced it with Rio 2500 HF to accomdodate the chiller. Is this pump producing a lot of heat?

:eek2:

Thats really odd. I dont think rio's put out that much heat but i can be wrong. I have touched a Rio in decades. WHy dont you shut off your chiller and pump and see the results. This wil give you a solid answer.

It could be your pump, but temps have been fluctuating quite a bit around here lately. Have you backed off on air conditioning since you installed the chiller?

It sounds like you might want to have a heater in there too to keep your temps from fluctuating that much.

make sure you chiller is well ventilated so that the hot air does not get recycled through the intake- a big mistake I made in the past.

I have an existing heater that is set to 77 deg. and I don't use an A/C in the house. When I checked my other tank this morning, its temp is close to it at night time (79-80). Right now, the reef tank's temp is around 81.8 deg. I have set the chiller to 82 deg. I think I found out my mistake when I set up the chiller. I drastically set the chiller to 77 when then tank' temp was in the 80's. MY Coral beauty and 2 chromis got schocked plus some of my corals, too. Right now, they're back to normal except for some of my softies. Do you think it's beacuse of the sudden temp. changes?

Really sudden temperature changes are very bad (like a water change w/ significantly different temp), but with a chiller it should have taken a short while for it to reach 77. Mine is set for a 3 degree temperature variance and I havent seen any problems with it.

What is your tmep setting and what type of chiller do you use?

I'm running a Pacific Imports 1/10hp chiller on 60g total water volume. I have the temp set at 82 Max 79 Low. When the tank hits 82 it runs for about 10 min until temp hits 79. Effectively the tank is always around 80-81 degrees since it turns on and off once it hits the max/min.

I would love to run my temp lower, but my condo tends to be hot during the summer.

I think my pulsing xenia colony doesn't like the 82 deg. setting
on the chiller but the rest have no problem with it. Any idea what should be the right temp. for this coral?

78F.... I got a frag of this Xenia stuff like 2 weeks ago...The thing is getting bigger everyday!

It might be temperature fluctuations, but I think your problems might have something to do w/ water params. Xenia are good indicators of health in your system, and as far as I know Xenia should be fine in 82 deg (this is from personal experience, so if any xenia experts out there know better, then fire away!:p )

Did some quick research after second guessing myself and it seems that temp spikes are a big reason for xenia decline. I'd check your params anyway :).

Thanks for the info. My night temp reaches 81.8 and dya temp reaches ablout 82. should i lower it to 82 or increase the heater temp to 78. I am not using any any in the house so the temp might depend on the room's.

You might want to consider getting a controller so you don't have to mess around with getting the precise variance. Especially when it comes down to a heater controller. They aren't the most precise things. Get a dual controller or something like it and that way you they won't battle in each other. I like the tank to be at a max temp of 80.

What type/brand would you recommend? I thought chillers have automatic controllers if the temp gets to the certain degree then it kicks in then stops where you set your heater.

I have my chiller set to come on at 83 and off at 81 degrees. My fans kick on at 80.5 and 81 degrees.

Most chillers do have controllers but it only controls the chiller and not the heater. The heater also has a thermostat, but sometimes they may conflict. I've had a heater thermostat malfunction and it just stayed on and then the chiller kicked in and stayed on...the only way I notice what was happening is because the chiller was on so long.

Anyways, the cheapest way to go is to get a ranco type controller or you can fancy and get an Octopus or Aqua Controller....I have an Octopus.
